The two fees, and their sneaky detail

The detail most fee articles miss is that Whatnot’s two fees are calculated on different bases:

• The 8% commission applies to the final sale price only, excluding shipping and taxes. Win an auction at $20, commission is charged on $20.
• The 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee applies to the total order value: item price, plus any shipping the buyer paid, plus buyer-paid sales tax.

So shipping and sales tax escape the commission but not the processing fee. eBay is blunter about it: its 13.25% card rate hits the whole buyer total, shipping included, and its fee base includes sales tax too. Both platforms make you pay a percentage on money you never see; Whatnot just does it at 2.9% instead of 13.25%.

Also worth knowing: fees apply per checkout. If a buyer grabs five cards in your live and they’re bundled into one shipment, fees were still calculated on each purchase, though the $0.30 transaction fee applies once per transaction rather than per item within it.
